1. Short Description of the topic

In this webinar series, one of the field’s leading academic/practitioners, Professor Christian van Nieuwerburgh will explore a number of topics that will support participants to reflect on ways of developing their practice.  These sessions are appropriate for anyone wishing to reflect on their practice and consider ways of enhancing their effectiveness.

Through reflective practice, coaches can continue to develop their craft and increase their “coaching maturity”. The webinars will explore how positive psychology can enhance coaching practice; consider the importance of professional context when coaching; and highlight the relevance of intercultural-sensitivity to 21st century coaching practice. The final webinar will be emergent and responsive, informed by the discussions, questions and areas of interest discovered over the first three seminars.

2. In this webinar series you will learn:

a) how the principles of positive psychology underpin effective coaching conversations and practice

b) more about the question of professional credibility. To what extent is a “relevant” professional background necessary for successful coaching?

c) about the relevance of intercultural-sensitivity in every coaching conversation

d) strategies for ensuring your clients feel included and valued

3. Topics and schedule for the webinar series

**Live webinars will take place at: 13hrs00 BST on the above mentioned dates.

Webinar 1: Coaching and positive psychology

In this interactive seminar, participants will have the opportunity to consider the case for integrating coaching and positive psychology. This integration allows for a broader range of applications (1-1 and organisational settings), provides a theoretical underpinning for coaching practice and ensures a dual focus on behavioural change and wellbeing.

Webinar 2: Coaching in various professional contexts

In this interactive seminar, participants will explore the similarities and differences of coaching in various professional contexts. Christian will present some of the conclusions that emerged from the edited book,Coaching in Professional Contexts. The idea of “coaching cultures” and the concept of “democratic voluntary involvement” will be shared.

Webinar 3: Intercultural sensitivity and coaching

In this interactive seminar, participants will discuss the ideas of “coaching for diversity” and “cross-cultural coaching”. Christian will present the concept of “interculturally-sensitive coaching” and share ideas about best practice in this arena. This session will conclude with a discussion about “otherness”.

Webinar 4: “Advanced” coaching practice

This innovative session will be exploratory and emergent. Participants will decide on the topic of the seminar based on a video of real coaching practice. The seminar will conclude with a discussion about “coaching maturity”.

Recordings and slides will be made available for all registered participants.

4. Preparation & Resources:

Watch the TED talk “The New Era of Positive Psychology”

Reflect on the following question and make some notes:

(1)   How important is it for a coach to have the same professional experience as their coachee?

(2)   What is important to consider when coaching people who have had life experiences that are very different to ours?

Film yourself coaching before Webinar 4.  Watch the video of your coaching session and identify your top strengths as a coach. If you are not able to video a coaching session, just reflect on your most recent coaching conversation, and list your top five strengths as a coach.
